The 2002 Summer High School Research Internship Program brought seven talented Newark students to the Institute for a summer-long research experience. Following a two-week introductory workshop, each student was assigned to a personal mentor and Principal Investigator, after which they worked for the next six weeks on their own research projects.
The high quality of the Interns' work was evident at the First Annual Summer Intern Symposium, held at the ICPH in October 2002. The Interns presented their research to families, teachers, school administrators and scientists. In his remarks at the end of the program, Dr. David Perlin, PHRI Scientific Director, welcomed the Interns as scientists and peers. Newark City Councilman Charles Bell described the Symposium as "a wonderful night which demonstrated what Newark students can do when given a chance."
