Postdoctoral position available at the Public Health Research Institute/Department of Medicine, UMDNJ, Newark NJ.
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Gennaro at PHRI, New Jersey Medical School (with joint supervision by Dr. Pine). We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral fellow to work on an NIH-funded project on system-level modeling of host-pathogen interaction networks in latency and reactivation of tuberculosis.
Research Project:
More than two decades of intense effort in tuberculosis research have shown that tuberculosis cannot be successfully controlled unless we recognize – and act upon -- the host-pathogen interactions that are critical to infection outcome. Any outcome of infection with tubercle bacilli can be viewed as the result of reciprocal, likely iterative, interaction dynamics in which host cells and bacteria change each other at cellular and molecular levels. Our project proposes to uncover and mechanistically understand the networks controlling these dynamics by combining experimental, computational, and modeling approaches.
Responsibilities:
The postdoctoral fellow will perform ex vivo infection of primary human monocytes/macrophages and human monocytic cell lines with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and assess the effect of infection of the host cells by transcriptomics using RNA sequencing, measure gene expression at the single-cell level by FISH, and evaluate phenotypic markers by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. Data will be used to construct and test mathematical models of gene-regulatory and metabolic networks involved in the macrophage response to infection. The research will be conducted in collaboration with computational biologists and mathematical modelers.
Qualifications:
MD or Ph.D. or equivalent in biological sciences, chemistry, physics or related field. Candidates with experience in eukaryotic cell biology and/or experimental immunology are strongly preferred. Previous experience with M. tuberculosis is desirable but not indispensable. Strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, English proficiency, and strong oral and written communication skills are expected.
Environment:
The PHRI Center is located in the ICPH building in an attractive section of Newark, NJ, readily accessible from New York City and residential neighborhoods in North and South New Jersey. The host laboratory and several other laboratories at PHRI and in the Department of Medicine in the main campus carry out research on pathogen and host biology in tuberculosis that is highly recognized worldwide.
