Postdoctoral/Research Associate position available at the Public Health Research Institute / Department of Medicine, NJ Medical School, Rutgers University, Newark NJ.
A Postdoctoral/Research Associate position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Gennaro at PHRI, New Jersey Medical School. We are looking for a motivated investigator to work on an NIH-funded project on a novel assay cell-mediated immunity to tuberculosis.
Two billion people – nearly one-third of the world’s population – are infected with M. tuberculosis and show no symptoms (LTBI). From this pool, more than nine million people develop disease every year (PTB), and almost two million die. Effective therapeutic intervention requires timely and accurate diagnostics. With an interdisciplinary team of cellular immunologists and molecular biologists (Drs. Bushkin, Pine, Tyagi), we have developed a new platform that measures T cell responses to ex vivo antigen stimulation using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to detect induced expression of T cell activation markers and flow cytometry to obtain single-cell, multi-parameter readouts. We propose to develop the platform for the diagnosis of the respiratory infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The combined robustness of nucleic acid- based detection and single cell readout will also be exploited to explore immunological biosignatures distinctive of LTBI vs PTB, and those associated with anti-TB vaccination.
The selected candidate will perform ex vivo stimulation of peripheral blood cells with M. tuberculosis antigen, measure gene expression at the single-cell level by FISH and flow cytometry; will be responsible for optimization of hybridization protocols, and execution and analysis of single-parameter and multi-parameter flow cytometry; will coordinate the interaction with TB clinical centers to obtain blood samples from various TB diagnostic groups.
MD or Ph.D. or equivalent in biological sciences, chemistry, physics or related field. Experience with clinical immunology and flow cytometry is strongly preferred. Strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, English proficiency, and strong oral and written communication skills are expected.
The PHRI Center is located in the ICPH building in an attractive section of Newark, NJ, readily accessible from New York City and residential neighborhoods in North and South New Jersey. The host laboratory and several other laboratories at PHRI and in the Department of Medicine in the main campus carry out research in tuberculosis that is highly recognized worldwide. For additional information about the Gennaro laboratory, please visit its web site.
Applicants should submit their resume, a letter stating their research interests, and email addresses of three references to email@example.com.
